Homemade treats
I haven't made much treats yet. I once made grilled sweet potato strips, it took quite long for them to be in the oven and get completely dried out, she really loved them though and they are healthy!
Very easy to make: get a sweet potato, cut it up in strips, apply a bit of olive oil and let it cook in the oven.
For her last birthday I made a little cake, I used: 1 egg, big spoon of peanut butter, 2 table spoons of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of honey, cup white flour, teaspoon of baking powder and a cup of shredded carrot.
Mix the whole this together and put it in the oven until it looks nice, full and non sticky! Very easy, and she loved it!
I will update this section as soon as I baked some more, for any suggestions... let me know!
Kong recipes I like to make
A Kong is the greatest thing a dog owner can have. If your dog wants some attention but you are busy, if you leave them home alone or if you have some food left and you don't know what to do with it... shove it in a Kong, perfect!
It keeps them occupied, happy, and if it is warm, a frozen Kong can help them cool down a bit.
These are the recipes I mainly use:
Frozen Kongs
Lean natural yoghurt / cottage cheese, with some dogbiscuits, cheese and a big dogcookie to close it up.
Squashed banana, dog biscuits, cheese, some food leftovers.
Not my pic! |
Not frozen
Yoghurt with a dog cookie to close it up so it doesn't run out.
Smear some peanutbutter, coconut oil and or honey on the insides and add some dogbiscuits
Squashed banana, with some cheese or whatever I can find in the fridge.
Kong succes stories
Whenever I would take Amber with me to the office, or to a dinner or party where I knew she wouldn't get too much attention. I take a frozen Kong with me so she is occupied for at least 30 min. After finishing the Kong she is normally tired enough to take a nap.
A colleague of mine had a very cute but extremely active puppy who she would sometimes take to the office with her. This puppy would run around like crazy, constantly ask for attention and try to bite peoples toes. I happened to have a frozen Kong in the freezer there with some yoghurt and cheese in it, I asked if I could give it to the pup... As soon as I gave the kong, he was completely quiet, licking this thing for an hour, didn't bother anyone anymore. After finishing the Kong he was tired and went straight to sleep. A week later she proudly showed me that she got one herself and that it worked like a charm!
A method like this can teach a pup calmness, and by keeping them occupied it prevents bad behaviours from happening and thus reocurring. A great tool for anyone with an active dog!
Why make homemade food?
I make Ambers own food, I personally believe that a lot of commercial dog food lacks a lot of nutrients and contains a lot of preservatives and other parts you probably don't even want to know where it comes from.
And think about it... how long ago have dogs been domesticated? Thousands of years ago (read ten thousands of years), and they always lived of our scraps, until about a 100 years ago, when people started making pet food.
Of course there is some pretty good brands out there made with real fresh products, no grains, less or no salt, you name it. But they are pricey...
I therefor decided to make my own dog food by reading a lot of books on what nutrients a dog requires to eat and in which fresh foods these nutrients can be found.
Because I am not a nutritionist, I do not want to give out a recipe, because I do not want to be responsible if this recipe for some reason doesn't work for you. If you are interested in making your own dogfood, do some good research and get advice from a nutritionist (btw, not all vets are also nutritionists, so make sure you ask the right vet if you decide to do that). Feeding dogs raw or fresh food is getting more popular and there are a lot of fresh foods for sale at petstores and even supermarkets.
